Plants for Around my Pool

Ok-so I appreciate everyone's help re: my azaleas!  I have another issue.  I have tried to plant some container gardens to put around my pool, but many of the plants are not doing well.  Their leaves look like they are getting "burned."  I am thinking that maybe they do not like the pool water?  I am not watering the plants with pool water, obviously!!!  Could the water still be affecting my plants?  Are there plants that grow better around swimming pools than others?

 Thank you!  Cool

Re: Plants for Around my Pool

Mary,
I have never owned a pool, so I'm just guessing here, but I'd think that succulents would be pretty tough customers when it comes to resisting a few splashes of pool water, thanks to those glossy leaves of theirs. They do well in containers, and they don't mind a lot of water. If it's an extra splashy day by the pool you can just give them a gentle rinsing with the hose to get the chlorine off when everyone's done swimming. You didn't say what plants you tried that are burning, but another thought is to just try some inexpensive annuals, say whatever is on clearance at the garden center. If you pick them up cheap and they end up burning it's less of a loss, at least monetarily, than if you filled those containers with zonal geraniums or something else that costs more than your average flower!
Good luck!

Plants around your pool

I can't imagine you'd want too many plants close around your pool, but when choosing plants to put in your pool area, they do need to be heat tolerant because there is a lot of reflected heat given off by the concrete in and around the pool.  You know how hot your feet get sometimes before you jump in the pool?  Well this heat reflects onto the plants nearby.  Maybe it's not the chlorine in the pool water, maybe it's the heat of the concrete. Tropical plants usually do nicely in a pool area - ginger, jasmine, elephant ears, striped cannas, even a dwarf banana tree would be pretty.  Just make sure whatever you plant isn't a messy-leafed plant or you'll be cleaning leaves out of your pool when the wind blows.

You can add some offseason color and interest to a nearby wall or fence with a climbing rose or small fruit tree. This will landscape in the pool area but not really near your pool.

You should avoid plants that create hazards or lots of litter around your pool. The last thing you want is leaves dirtying up the water in your pool. It's a good idea to build a small barrier between whatever plants you have and the concrete area around your pool. This will keep your pool area clean, and the plant area separated off but still enjoyable to look at.

Tropical plants like ti leaves, pineapple, orchids are all "clean" plants that look great in a pool area.

Good luck!
