Hydrangea Blooms: Proper Cutting and Care Techniques

Hydrangea blooms are fabulous accent pieces in your home, office or on an outdoor dininig area. However, to ensure that your hydrangea is protected when you retrieve these blooms there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • A bloom can last up to one month if it is cut when only a week old and fully colored.
  • When cutting the bloom make sure you cut the green area and not the brown are of the stem to guarantee that new hydrangeas flowers will appear next year.
  • When cutting the bloom make sure it is done on a diagnonal

Once the hydrangea bloom is cut it is important to care for it properly to ensure a long display time. If you follow these simple guidelines your hydrangea blooms can last up to one month:

  • Immediately place the hydrangea in water for two hours
  • Either smash the bottom of the stem with a hammer or cut one inch off the bottom after it has soaked in the water to guarantee it can absorb the water.
  • Place the hydrangea in a short vase which will guarantee a longer life span. The longer the stem the more water it will need and shorter life span it will have.
  • Trim off any leaves from the stem prior to immersing in water

Follow the above steps and you will find prolonged enjoyment of your beautiful hydranges!
