Hydrangea Blooms: Proper Cutting and Care Techniques

Hydrangea blooms are fabulous accent pieces in your home, office or on an outdoor dininig area. However, to ensure that your hydrangea is protected when you retrieve these blooms there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • A bloom can last up to one month if it is cut when only a week old and fully colored.
  • When cutting the bloom make sure you cut the green area and not the brown are of the stem to guarantee that new hydrangeas flowers will appear next year.
  • When cutting the bloom make sure it is done on a diagnonal

Once the hydrangea bloom is cut it is important to care for it properly to ensure a long display time. If you follow these simple guidelines your hydrangea blooms can last up to one month:

Why doesn't my hydrangea bush bloom?

I have several hydrangea bushes in my yard, and most of them are doing excellently. But there is one bush in particular that looks really healthy, but just doesn't give any flowers. The leaves are healthy and it's a nice big bush but no flowers! It's never given flowers ever since I can remember. Any ideas on what I should be doing differently?

How to dry hydrangeas

I love the hydrangea flowers. I think they're beautiful. Does anyone have any advice on how to dry them for dried flower arrangements? I have a big bush of hydrangeas; I do use fresh cut flowers as often as I can but would love to dry the extras to use when the flowers are no longer in bloom. Does anybody know how to do this?

Thanks,

My Hydrangeas are Pink-Wanted the Blue Purple

Greeting Fellow Gardeners!

Last year was my first attempt with Hydrangeas and I really enjoyed the beautiful purple blue color. Had so many blossoms that I continually decorated my house all summer long with them! However, this year I noticed that I no longer have the pretty blue purple hydrangeas and that they are actually bloominig a pink color. Although these are lovely, I really do prefer the color of last years hydrangeas. Anyone have any idea why this is happening and if I can influence the color??

What types of Hydrangea thrive in full shade?

My husband and I own a two story home that is north facing. This makes planting a bit more difficult as we get little sunlight on the front portion of the landscape. Add to that the fact that I love Hydrangeas, and you have a bit of a landscaping dilemma I was hoping you all could help me solve. What I want to know is what varieties of Hydrangea will do well with almost no direct sunlight? Is this even possible, or should I try and pick shade plants and hope for the best?
