Vegetable container gardening

Has anyone ever done vegetable container gardening? With the high cost of fresh vegetables, even at our local farmers' market, I want to start growing some basic vegetables that our family uses all the time - tomatoes, onions, lettuce, green onion, carrots, etc. Has anybody had good luck with growing vegetables in containers? I'm really not into digging up my backyard and dealing with weeds and all. Any help and advice will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Malia

Re: Vegetable container gardening

Hi, Malia--

I'm actually doing all of my tomatoes in containers this year. I love the Sweet Million cherry tomatoes so much, and I can never have enough! I put those in my biggest containers, and in the smaller containers I put a Patio variety of tomato. The difference is the Patio is a determinate vine and the cherry and other tomatoes I'm growing are indeterminate. It should say on any tomato plant's tag which type they are, but most are indeterminate. That means they'll grow on and on and you'll have to stake or cage them and they'll keep fruiting. The determinate variety will only grow so much and will stop fruiting when it's run its course. That's why they're good for containers, because they stay small, but otherwise they give you a disadvantage because they yield fewer tomatoes. I've done lettuce in containers and had good luck, but I can't help you with advice on the other veggies! Best of luck!
