Bulbs

Identifying bulbs

in

I know this is a weird question. I found some bulbs in a burlap bag in the shed behind my friend's house. I don't what they are at all. Is there any way to find out without actually putting them in the ground? Is there a website anyone knows of to specifically match up the look of bulbs to tell what they are?

Thanks a lot,

Malia

Bulbs that do well in rainy areas

in

Can anyone tell me if there are bulb plants that do especially well in rainy areas or does it matter? I live in an area that rains all year round (although mostly at night), so our ground is very moist here. Because of the rain, it's also very green here, but I worry about whether our ground is too moist for bulb plants. Is there such a thing as too much rain for a bulb plant? Just wondering. Thanks for your help.

Heirloom bulbs

in

I am interested in getting into heirloom flowers and plants. I live in the Southwest, so it's pretty hot here and then it gets cool in the winter. Are there any good sources for heirloom flower bulbs that would do well here? Should I leave the bulbs in the ground when it gets cold? Is anybody on this forum into heirloom plants and can you tell me your experience with them? I'd sure appreciate it.

Thanks,

How to propagate bulbs

in

I was wondering about different kinds of bulb flowers, and whether there is a way to multiply or propagate the bulbs.  Do the bulbs just stay as a single bulb when you plant them, or do they spread out around the original area that they are planted in?  Are there certain types of bulb flowers that are better for multiplying than others?

Thanks for any help you can give,

How do I keep critters from eating my flower bulbs?

in

I love spring bulbs, but I have a terrible time with little creatures digging up the bulbs right after I plant them.  I have tried cayenne pepper, and that works sometimes, but I am wondering if anyone has a tried and true method of success. There is just nothing more frustrating than planting a hundred flower bulbs and then waking up one morning and finding all of the bulbs uprooted and half-eaten!

Or-does anybody know which bulbs are less tasty to critters?  I hate to just stop planting my flower bulbs, but I could plant pansies instead--they wouldn't get eaten!

Which daffodil bulbs are best for my garden in the south?

in

I recently moved to the deep south (near Atlanta, Georgia), and have lots of beautiful bulb catalogs awaiting my selections for spring bulbs! I am a bit nervous, though, because I have heard that bulbs do not do so well down here. I used to grow tons of daffodils, and they were the highlight of my spring. I would be so sad to have to give them up. I really love daffodils, and am wondering which varieties would do the best in my new garden? I appreciate any help! Thank you!

When should I cutback the leaves on my bulb flowers?

in

My bulb flowers have done beautifully this year. We have had good rain, and plenty of strong sunlight that have made my flowers really bright. And as I look to the summer and fall months with my garden. I want to think ahead and prune back when it is appropriate. So my question is, how do I know when to cut back the leaves on my bulb flowers?
