I love the Fourth of July! It is my favorite holiday! This year, I would love to throw a big bash in my new garden. I am looking for fun ideas for a kid-friendly Fourth of July Garden Party. My daughter, Lucy, and her friends might be scared of fireworks, so I would love any ideas for planning a fun party in my yard. That way, we can avoid the crowds downtown and relax in our beautiful garden! I appreciate any help!

Fourth of July outdoor decor
Although I tend to stay away from primary colors in my garden in favor of softer colors (lots of pale pinks, soft blues, lavender, whites, and silver), I will do reds and blues in containers on the years when we entertain for July Fourth. Red geraniums are so easy to come by and the tone of red is just right, and so many flowers come in pure white (I like petunias and alyssum). For blues there is of course blue salvia and also lobelia, although around here I often have trouble finding the shade of blue that I want in those flowers. They tend to be more purple than blue. One year I just put the red and white flowers in blue-glazed pots, and the effective was very nice. You could also make up small vases of salvia spikes and red roses or the geranium flowers to use on the table, or wherever you want a splash of patriotic color.
This is something the kids can help with: picking out the red, white, and blue flowers at the garden center, and if they're old enough they can help to plant them or arrange the containers or pick blooms for the vases. I remember helping my parents in the garden and how that made me feel that the garden was mine, too. A little goes a long way with kids. They'll feel good watching their stuff grow all summer.
Patriotic Foods
Sounds like your party will be a blast--may I come?
Fourth of July is such a fun time for parties--the mood is so festive! I'm not sure where you live, but berries should be in season, whether they're strawberries or raspberries and of course blueberries, so you can make a red, white, and blue dessert or salad! I like to mix them with vanilla ice cream and coconut for the effect.
Another thing we did for our kids a couple of years ago was to make our own ice pops using the freezer molds. We layered blue and red fruit smoothie mixtures and then let the little ones go wild with them, getting all sticky and messy before rinsing off with the hose and in the wading pool. It's such simple, pure fun and I think years from now it's what they'll really remember from childhood...especially since we took plenty of photos, too!
4th of July Garden Party
Well it just sounds like you're looking for ways to celebrate with kids!
Red, white and blue twinkle lights hung all around your trees, or lighting up your patio (even in broad daylight) will please any kid (and adult.) You can also find lots of red, white and blue balloons at the drugstore, blow them up and make them part of the decorations. Stream from your trees and plants. If you've got areas of your garden that you don't want kids to trample on, then put balloons in that area and tell the kids that the balloons mean "off limits". If they do a good job of staying away from your flowers, then give them the balloons later in the day when the sun goes down.
If your kids don't like fireworks, you can decorate using pinwheels and buy a lot of glowsticks. Kids think they are very cool when it gets dark outside.
For kid-friendly food, have lots of salty snacks and dips. Have tons of hot dogs and pretzels.
You can make special Independence Day Pretzels by dipping the pretzels in white chocolate and sprinkling them with red and blue sprinkles.
You can freeze red and blue juices or Kool-aids into ice cube trays, and then when the 4th of July arrives, you can serve clear drinks like ice water or 7up and put in red, white and blue ice cubes. They'll be a hit.

4th of July garden party
I don't think you can ever go wrong with barbecued hot dogs, ribs, hamburgers, and fresh corn. Add to that ice cold potato salad and cole slaw. For dessert, you can serve cut up fruit in a hollowed out watermelon, Apple pie, and a homemade sheet cake decorated with white frosting, canned cherries and blueberries to look like the American flag.
You could also do up fresh fruits and veggies (straight from your garden) on nice big platters. Decorate your platter with the tops of pineapples (after slicing the pineapples to put on the plate) and sprigs of mint and rosemary.
The main thing about the 4th of July is to relax and have fun. Don't take it too serious!

Happy 4th of July
On the 4th of July, it's always great to have lots of fresh finger foods. Shrimp cocktail, things on skewers, lots of
fresh fruit with different dipping sauces. Sliced meats and cheeses that are easy to serve and eat. Or you could make it an easy affordable potluck if you're having a lot of people over.
BBQ steaks, tandoori chicken. Have you ever tried banana wrapped in bacon & put on the grill? It's terrific! Have lots of side dishes - rice, homemade BBQ sauce, a variety of salads. Our table wouldn't be the same without the jello salad every year! Have lots of chilled and sliced fresh fruit around for the kids to pick on all day.
